so what does the future look like? no one can tell. but i know the choice is yours, the future is now. make good use of everyday, a man can achieve greater successes, a country can gain prosperity and the whole world can be united, as it has never been before.

that reminds me of a game we used to play.we put the chairs in a circle.and the player must pass through th barriers made by the chairs with his eyes covered up.he would be allowed to memorize the positions of the chairs.but as soon as his eyes is covered,we will remove all the chairs.
sometimes,our life is just like such kind of game.we tried our best not to bump against the barriers.but these things turn out to be e_isting only in our minds.and sometimes,we made them for ourselves.we dare not to participate a competition or get cold feet to call the boy or girl we love.it turns out that the barriers we made for ourselves lead to the loss of a lot of things.
don"t give up trying untill you really bump against the chairs.even so,at least you have a place to sit on.
some people would say i tried but i failed to pass an e_am or to find a job.i"am a failure .but on the contrary,i prefer to call these things setbacks instead of failures.there is no failure in a winner "s dictionary.
it doesn"t matter i you have a tumble , what really matters is that you lose the courage to stand up and give it another try.the process is full of tears and pains.
just look back on how we learn to walk when we are young.if we gave up easily,today we may only crawl .if tomas edison gave up easily in finding a proper material to make a bulb,maybe we will live in the darkness after the sunset.perhaps we need some torches to go on with our competition.
i,myself,a shy person by nature who easily suffers from stage fright,had to get up my courage to take part in this speech contest like this.i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not coming here.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am.i will try my best because i know i would broaden my horizon and make a lot of friends here.

like a child endlessly asking, we humans, throughout history, have been continually demanding what we desire from nature. we enjoy the comfort and beauty of our furniture, yet we never bother to think about the serious soil erosion caused by deforestation. we take it for granted that we must warm ourselves in winter times, yet we seldom realize the burning away of precious natural resources. we appreciate all the prosperity from the development of modern industry, yet few would give the slightest consideration to the global air and water pollution caused by industrial wastes. our ruthless e_ploitation has permanently impaired our mother earth. as we tragically learned from last summer"s floods. we cannot continue our carelessness.
finally, standing here at the threshold of the 21st century, we cannot help thinking of our posterity. nature is not only the mother of the present generation, but also the mother of the generations to come. how severely our descendents will criticize us if we leave them a barren and lifeless mother? how much more they will appreciate us if we give them a world of harmony to inherit? let us start respecting and caring for nature from now on. let us start the campaign of creating a mutually beneficial relationship between people and nature right from this moment. with this new start, i firmly believe, that our children, and our children"s children will live in a brand new age of green trees, clean air, crystal water, blue sky and an even more promising world!

there are obvious reasons why some western holidays are so popular in china. on the one hand, some of the western holidays which we chinese don’t have are reasonable and meaningful, such as father’s day and april fool’s day etc. on the other hand,the prevalence of globalization enables western culture to prevail in china. overwhelmed by such a trend,chinese unconsiciously get involved in western holidays and culture.
with the further development of the whole world, the cultural communication between different countries and nations becomes faster and more and more important. we are indeed from different nations, but we are the citizens of the same world, so the outstanding culture of different nations is the commom wealth of everyone on the earth.the only way for us to protect our traditional culture is to reject the foreign culture? the answer is definitely no. what we ought to do is to spare no effort to educate chinese to get to know and treasure our splendid traditions instead of rejecting foreign culture. only by educating can we set our confidence and belief towards our culture. only by educating can we preserve and promote the wealth that our ancesters left for us.

in bandung back in, i think, 1954, was the first unity meeting in centuries of black people. and once you study what happened at the bandung conference, and the results of the bandung conference, it actually serves as a model for the same procedure you and i can use to get our problems solved. at bandung all the nations came together. their were dark nations from africa and asia. some of them were buddhists. some of them were muslim. some of them were christians. some of them were confucianists; some were atheists. despite their religious differences, they came together. some were communists; some were socialists; some were capitalists. despite their economic and political differences, they came together. all of them were black, brown, red, or yellow.
the number-one thing that was not allowed to attend the bandung conference was the white man. he couldn"t come. once they e_cluded the white man, they found that they could get together. once they kept him out, everybody else fell right in and fell in line. this is the thing that you and i have to understand. and these people who came together didn"t have nuclear weapons; they didn"t have jet planes; they didn"t have all of the heavy armaments that the white man has. but they had unity.

other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the olympic games that cannot be seen directly. for e_ample, more and more people will get to know china. i’m sure the mysterious chinese culture will attract them strongly. and the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. what is more, olympic games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of chinese youth with the olympic values and the olympic spirit. now that we have seen so many advances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?
i’ve already said a lot about the olympics and china. but i think everyone should use some time to think of this question, ”does the olympic games have any special meaning to you?”
for us, i mean the chinese youth, 20__ olympic games is a tremendous gift. because what we are waiting for is to do something significant as repaying the love given to us .the society is just like a ship, and in our dreams the captain is waving his hand and saying ”hey! come here and take the helm! ”how charming his voice is, but we have never heard of it in our true life. this morning, however, when we wake up, we will see the olympic games waving its hand. after chewing, most of us will have at least one plan about what to do for the olympic games. and mine is to be a “comforter” ----that is someone who will give comfort to others.

"once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. to all the suitors who came to the king"s palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each ne_t to impossible. one day, into the king"s palace came a handsome young prince..." well, you know the rest. the three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess"s hand triumphantly.
and the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "and they live happily every after."
why aren"t we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, i would say, so unimaginative? how can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? because, i think, it is a typical success story. it is highly philosophical and symbolic. by implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
the story not only caters to everyone"s inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. the reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. if a person inherits his father"s millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. the term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. but as i understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. to clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
if we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away david seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another david, namely david beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. if we further changed the rules by not allowing arsenal"s defenders to defend, so that beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. in accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. the sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
the concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. in acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. that"s why we greatly admire stephen hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.
i myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am. if i come out first, it will be a great success for me. if i come out last-i hope this will not be the case-but if i come out last, i will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. for me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because i have truly gained by participating.
let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. you my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. the ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

for the families of the seven, we cannot bear, as you do, the full impact of this tragedy. but we feel the loss, and we"re thinking about you so very much. your loved ones were daring and brave, and they had that special grace, that special spirit that says, "give me a challenge, and i"ll meet it with joy." they had a hunger to e_plore the universe and discover its truths. they wished to serve, and they did. they served all of us.
we"ve grown used to wonders in this century. it"s hard to dazzle us. but for twenty-five years the united states space program has been doing just that. we"ve grown used to the idea of space, and, perhaps we forget that we"ve only just begun. we"re still pioneers. they, the members of the challenger crew, were pioneers.
there"s a coincidence today. on this day three hundred and ninety years ago, the great e_plorer sir francis drake died aboard ship off the coast of panama. in his lifetime the great frontiers were the oceans, and a historian later said, "he lived by the sea, died on it, and was buried in it." well, today, we can say of the challenger crew: their dedication was, like drake"s, complete.
and i want to say something to the schoolchildren of america who were watching the live coverage of the shuttle"s take-off. i know it"s hard to understand, but sometimes painful things like this happen. it"s all part of the process of e_ploration and discovery. it"s all part of taking a chance and e_panding man"s horizons. the future doesn"t belong to the fainthearted; it belongs to the brave. the challenger crew was pulling us into the future, and we"ll continue to follow them.
the crew of the space shuttle challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. we will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of god."
i"ve always had great faith in and respect for our space program. and what happened today does nothing to diminish it. we don"t hide our space program. we don"t keep secrets and cover things up. we do it all up front and in public. that"s the way freedom is, and we wouldn"t change it for a minute.
we"ll continue our quest in space. there will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews and, yes, more volunteers, more civilians, more teachers in space. nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.
i want to add that i wish i could talk to every man and woman who works for nasa, or who worked on this mission and tell them: "your dedication and professionalism have moved and impressed us for decades. and we know of your anguish. we share it."

ray’s wedding had gone off without a hitch. everyone seemed to have had a good time. a few people had too good of a time; they went home with designated drivers. all evening, the gift table remained unguarded. who would steal anything, ray thought. he had never heard of such a thing happening at a wedding. but his best friend aaron said there was a first time for everything. he strolled out regularly from the inside festivities to check on the gift table, making sure no one suspicious was hanging around it.
ray and julia went on a 3-week honeymoon to italy right after the wedding. when they got back, they opened all the gifts and sent out thank you notes. but there was one problem. a married couple that used to be good friends had apparently given nothing. this surprised julia, because walt and mary said they were thrilled to be invited. and, they actually seemed to have had a great time at the wedding. frankly, ray didn’t even care if they hadn’t given a gift. he just needed to know whether to send a thank you note. ray called aaron. aaron said maybe walt had left an envelope on the gift table like aaron had. “yes, but we got your envelope with the cash inside,” ray said.
“maybe my envelope looked too thin, and some thief thought walt’s envelope looked nice and fat.”
aaron asked ray if he had looked everywhere for walt’s gift. had he called up the wedding site to see if anything had been left behind? ray said that he had looked everywhere and made a lot of calls that were fruitless.
ray didn’t know what to do. if he sent walt and mary a thank you note for a gift they hadn’t given, they would be insulted. if he didn’t send them a thank you note for a gift they had given, they would be insulted.
“what would you do?” ray asked. aaron said he would call walt up and tell him the problem.
“you can’t go wrong with simply being honest,” aaron said.

facing this audience on the stage, i have the e_citing feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest. it is an assembly of some of china"s most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.
i"m grateful that i"ve been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.
though it is only within my power to tell about my personal e_perience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, i believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years.
in my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.
the teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she e_pected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, i always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.
one day before the final e_am, she came up to me and said, "could you please e_plain this to me? i want very much to do better this time. " i started e_plaining, and finished in a hurry. pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, i ran off quickly. nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the e_am. and two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. no one ever knew about the little task i failed to fulfill, but i couldn"t forgive myself. i simply couldn"t forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, "why didn"t you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? why didn"t you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that i would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?"
i was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for i began to understand the word "responsibility" and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.
later in my life, i continued to e_perience many failures. but never again did i feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that i have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best i can.
as i grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, i began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. new buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.
new ideas, new information, new technologies. people can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. society is becoming more competitive.
words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.
such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. yet in the meantime, many problems still e_ist.
we learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. we hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can"t even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and lu_ury cars.
we buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the e_pense of morality and responsibility.
such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.
such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems. history has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.
standing here now, i think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student. probably i"ll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. but this doesn"t discourage me any, for i know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it"s going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that i will be living.
standing here now, i think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. but that doesn"t discourage us any, because we know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.
i can"t ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn"t had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.
it is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.
we are not going to evade that responsibility. we are going to let people down. and people, far and near, will hear of us. frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, so let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.
